Kids 'n Tet

Kids 'n Tet is one of our most popular events during the Tet Festival. Created by one of our own long time supporters, Thu-Van Nguyen, has developed this program from a mere idea into a central station where children of all ages get hands-on experience in arts and crafts relating to the Vietnamese culture and traditions surrounding Tet. By popular demand, Kids 'n Tet has traveled to local elementary schools throughout the year to provide a fun learning environment for kids.

Kids 'n Tet allows kids to explore the Vietnamese zodiac through coloring books, button-making sessons and temporary tatoos. They are also guided by volunteers to make their own hoa mai from real branches and attachable plastic flowers. Kids 'n Tet provide crayons, pencils, books, and all materials at the Festival days.

To celebrate the Year of the Goat, Kid 'n Tet will help kids with four festive activities:

Making Cay Mai - Kids will learn how to make the symbolic flower of Tet by twining plastic yellow blossoms around real twigs.

Making Red Envelopes - This year, kids will learn to make their own red envelopes which adults use to give children lucky money. They will also learn to place correct accent marks on the words: Chuc Mung Nam Moi (Happy New Year) on the envelopes and will receive a little token for luck.

Making Bookmarks - Kids will also learn how to make bookmarks in the shape of Vietnam by cutting out the shape of the country, punching a hold on top and tying a tassle to the end.

Making Buttons of the Zodiac - Kids will learn their zodiac sign and will make buttons of their sign to wear in celebration of the new year.

After finishing all four of these activities, kids will be rewarded with a small gift! So come and learn about Tet while having fun!

Kids 'n Tet will be located on the main floor of the Center House and will be open for kids of all ages on Saturday January 25 from 2-5pm and Sunday, January 26 from 11:30 to 3pm.

On Friday 1, 2003, Kids 'N Tet will also helping kids make Red Envelopes at the Seattle Asian Art Museum at 11am. If you missed this fun activity at the festival, we welcome you to this Free Art Day for children at the Museum.
